Square Enix faces backlash from gamers over the launch of NFT game

Square Enix is facing much backlash from gamers over the development of its NFT game known as Symbiogenesis. Despite criticism, the game publisher has been among the few traditional companies in the industry still interested in incorporating non-fungible tokens and crypto technology in their offerings.

Square Enix NFT game faces backlash

There has been much controversy around integrating NFTs and blockchain technology in video games. The critics argue that these new technologies usually involve pay-to-win schemes, and companies offering these services focus more on the games’ business side than the gaming industry’s fundamental nature.

Square Enix is continuing with its NFT plans despite backlash. Symbiogenesis is the first NFT-based game developed by Square Enix. The official website for the game is already operational, with the project expected to complete by spring this year.

Square Enix has given people a glimpse of Symbiogenesis and what this NFT game will look like. It appears as if the game has paid much attention to NFTs. Some critics have also said that the graphics for the game appear to be AI-generated. Those opposed to the NFT game have said that it is a cash grab by Square Enix.

Symbiogenesis features more than 10,000 NFTs. The NFTs appear as characters that players can buy to unlock quests and make progress in the game. However, this game’s design has limited players’ ability to proceed with the gameplay story without purchasing NFTs.

The failure to purchase NFTs has prevented progress in this game unless the players are willing to pay huge sums of money. Moreover, there is also a risk of the players losing their investment if the in-game economy collapses.

Backlash over the use of NFTs in games

The use of NFTs and blockchain technology in video games has faced much criticism. Games offer players access to an immersive virtual world to experience captivating experiences and participate in creative gameplay dynamics.

However, the NFT space changes these dynamics because NFT games usually lock the most important content behind a paywall. This dynamic shows that these games offer a market-driven approach instead of focusing on entertainment. The model’s sustainability is also determined by a constant cash flow to ensure sustained functionality.

The players who want to participate in this game must buy NFTs which can sometimes be costly. The cost-intensive nature of these games makes it challenging for the player to earn profits. If the cash flow drops, the game will become unsustainable.

The other challenge faced by gamers in Square Enix is that the developer has chosen to abandon some of its most popular titles, such as Tomb Raider, to focus on its NFT offerings. There were also plans to refocus on abandoned projects such as Parasite Eve, but such plans were also abandoned.

Despite the backlash, NFT games are becoming increasingly popular, and their audience has grown. These games cater to enterprising individuals and those conversant with blockchain technology. Traditional games and gaming companies have continued to show interest in innovation.
