Square Enix has made several efforts to venture into the Web3 gaming industry. The company is aggressively investing in Web3 technology, with the release of a teaser for its upcoming NFT game, Symbiogenesis.

The Japanese game publisher has now announced that it is working with the Elixir PC gaming platform to bolster the adoption of Web3 games. Elixir is a platform that supports both Web2 and Web3 games on its platform. Elixir recently integrated the Epic Games Store library.

Elixir hopes to merge the Web2 and Web3 gaming industries through this partnership. However, few details have been shared on how the two companies will work together to deepen their ties in the Web3 industry.

The Director of Business Development at Square Enix, Hidaki Uehera, noted that the partnership with Elixir Games represented another move by the Japanese publisher to explore the decentralized gaming industry.

Similar sentiments were shared by the CEO of Elixir, Carlos Roldan, who said, “This partnership brings us closer to Web3 gaming mass adoption. Our team is incredibly excited to bring our technology to work, and we foresee Elixir users playing Web2 and Web3 games alike without distinction.”

Roldan added that in 2023, more players in the gaming industry had entered the Web3 space by launching impactful projects. As such, the industry was well-positioned to grow more as the year progressed. Roldan noted that the company had put all its efforts into achieving scalability.

Through this partnership, Elixir will be tasked with marketing and promoting NFT games to traditional players that are fans of other projects by Square Enix. However, the two companies have admitted to the challenges faced in the NFT gaming space, such as the low adoption of NFT games among players.

Elixir has integrated several Web3 games into its launcher by providing a wide range of titles across multiple blockchains, such as BNB Chain, Ethereum, Polygon, and Solana. These titles include MMORPG World Eternal Online, Raini: Lords of Light, and RPGs such as Bornless and Chronos.

Square Enix’s pursuit of Web3

Square Enix has made several efforts to support the growth of the Web3 gaming industry. Over the years, the game publisher has set itself apart from other Web2 gaming companies by showing commitment towards Web3 and blockchain offerings.

In 2020, Square Enix led an investment funding round for The Sandbox Metaverse game. The Sandbox is one of the largest players in the Web3 gaming space, and the investment marked a major move by the Japanese publisher.

The President of Square Enix, Yosuke Matsuda, previously said that the crypto gaming industry was here to stay. Matsuda said that according to the publisher, 2021 was “Year One” for NGYs. Towards the end of 2022, Square Enix released its first Web3 game, Symbiogenesis, which leverages the Ethereum scaling network Polygon.
