Take-Two Interactive asks MyMetaverse to remove NFTs from GTA servers

The parent company of GTA maker Rockstar Games, Take-Two Interactive, is ending non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on its servers. This comes as MyMetaverse allowed players to use NFTs and other similar collectibles, such as cars in the Grand Theft Auto servers.

GTA maker halts NFTs on its servers

Last week, Rockstar issued a notice outlining the dos and don’ts for players on the platform. The company said it would not support business exploitation, and players would not be allowed to make revenues from their servers through corporate sponsorships or in-game integrations.

Rockstar and its parent company Take-To, are also putting a stop to the misuse of the intellectual property and trademarks of Rockstar. It has barred players from engaging in the sale of digital currencies or using any form of crypto assets, including NFTs.

The announcement is a major setback for MyMetaverse and Enjin. In September, the two launched playable NFTs in Grand Theft Auto V and Minecraft servers. The MetaHome NFTs provided unique gameplay utility wherever they were recognized. In the MyMetaverse Grand Theft Auto 5 server, Infinity Auto, these NFTs were in the form of rare vehicles that players could buy outside the game and use them within the game.

MyMetaverse CEO reacts to NFT removal from GTA

The CEO of MyMetaverse, Simon Kertonegoro, said that he had received a letter from Take-Two, demanding the company halt all operations on the Infinity Auto server. He said that the company hoped it would work with Rockstar and create a way for players to earn items they could own forever.

“Today, we received a letter from Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two, asking us to cease all operations on the Infinity Auto Server. So, we have shut down our server, and we’ll never relaunch it. We want to do the right thing and respect Take-Two’s wishes, it was never our intent to upset them. We truly believed we were providing a service that was benefiting them,” Kertonegoro said.

He has also urged Rockstar to implement items that are interoperable between their games to give fans some sort of connection with the games, adding that his dreams would come true if these items were on the blockchain.

The CEO of Take-Two, Strauss Zelnick, has promoted NFTs as a way of extending concepts like digital collectibles. However, the company is yet to formally launch NFT collectibles. Moreover, most gamers and gaming developers are opposed to having NFTs.
