Meta announces support of NFTs on Facebook profile pictures

Meta has started rolling out features for non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The NFT feature will now be available to some creators based in the United States. The social media giant will roll out the feature with Ethereum and Polygon NFTs.

Meta rolls out NFT feature on Facebook

After rolling out the feature on Ethereum and Polygon, Meta plans to move this NFT support to other networks such as the Solana and Flow blockchains. The product manager at Meta, Navdeep Singh, shared insight on what NFTs on Facebook would look like.

Singh took to Twitter, saying that users will have a tab for “digital collectibles.” This tab will be available on users’ profiles, allowing them easy access to these NFTs. NFTs have become quite popular on social media platforms because these collectibles offer a sense of authenticity.

This feature lets users connect their cryptocurrency wallets to their Facebook profiles. Users can also convert their NFTs into Facebook posts. Users of the social media platform can then react to, like, comment, and share these posts just like any others on the platform.

According to Martin Bryant, a consultant in the tech and media industry, Meta wanted to have offerings that would attract Web3 enthusiasts. The social media giant has launched new features, such as the recent changes to Facebook Groups, to make them appear the same as Discord. Such offerings could be a way for the social media giant to enter the Web3 space.

NFTs on Instagram

Meta is also rolling out NFTs on Instagram. The social media giant started supporting NFTs on Instagram in May, but the service is only available for a few creators. The Instagram NFTs come with a wide range of benefits for the creators.

Instagram announced that the NFTs shared or posted on the social media platform will have an automatic tag for both the creators and the collectors. The company has announced that it will not charge any fees to users posting and sharing these NFTs. The collectors can also share these NFTs as augmented reality stickers.

Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, previously issued an announcement saying that NFTs were coming to Instagram because the creator economy was growing. “Now we think one really interesting opportunity for a subset of creators is NFTs – the idea of owning a unique digital item,” Mosseri said.
