Game publisher Square Enix partners with Polygon for an NFT art project

Square Enix has partnered with the Ethereum layer two scaling solution Polygon to release a non-fungible token (NFT) art collection. Square Enix has made several initiatives in the NFT and Web3 sectors despite backlash from the community.

Square Enix partners with Polygon

Square Enix is among the traditional game publishers interested in the NFT sector. The Tokyo-based game publisher is popular for titles such as Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts. Despite showing interest in blockchain gaming, Square Enix has received backlash from the community.

The project created through the partnership between Square Enix and Polygon will be titled Symbiogenesis. The project was first announced in November. The sale of the Symbiogenesis NFTs and an accompanying free browser service is scheduled to happen during the spring of this year.

A press release by the company said that the NFT game would come with a unique experience around digital collectibles. The NFTs will be associated with the player’s storyline within the digital adventure. The NFT art will evolve with every strategic move that a player makes.

According to the company, only three players will qualify for the final “World Mission.” These players will have to meet set criteria, and they will determine how the storyline will end, the virtual world’s fate, and everyone in this world.

This project will allow users to gain utility using items collected off-chain. The users can choose to trade these items on-chain through the Polygon blockchain. The game was initially slated for release on Ethereum, but the project has announced that it wants to take advantage of Polygon’s low fees and fast transaction speeds.

This gaming project will be set on a virtual floating continent where the storyline will be determined by the information acquired after holding digital collectible art representing different characters. After holding and trading digital collectible art, the players can unlock several engaging stories about the hidden world and its inhabitants.

The producer of this game, Naoyuki Tamate, said, “Symbiogenesis was designed from the ground up on the blockchain and is designed to provide an exceptional experience for both community building and trading.” Tamate also said it chose to work with Polygon because of high speeds, low fees, and user-friendliness.

Square Enix’s Web3 plans

Square Enix has made several initiatives in the Web3 industry. Usually, traditional game publishers that venture into blockchain gaming attract backlash from gamers, which is what has been witnessed by Square Enix. However, the company remains adamant about its NFT plans.

Square Enix is a gaming publisher that was launched in 2003. In recent years, the company has steadily supported the Web3 industry. Earlier this year, the company’s president, Yosuke Matsuda, published a New Year’s letter announcing its plans to double down on its Web3 efforts. In the letter, Matsuda said the company would make “aggressive investment and business development efforts” in Web3.
