Atari has teamed up with Coinbase to bring its classic games, Breakout, and Asteroids, to the blockchain through a new project called the Onchain Arcade. This partnership, part of the Onchain Summer initiative, marks a major move towards combining modern blockchain technology with classic gaming.

Through this partnership, Coinbase and Atari want to create a platform where gamers can contend for prizes and creators get fair payment directly from game sales. This effort shows Atari’s ongoing dedication to exploring new technologies and improving engagement for both players and creators in the digital world.

Atari Aims To Enhance Player Engagement And Ensure Fair Compensation For Creators

The Onchain Arcade will show Atari’s classic web2 games, Breakout and Asteroids. Gamers can buy these games and vie for top place on leaderboards.

Top player can win prizes like the Atari 2600+, game codes, and merchandise. This effort aims to both engage gamers and ensure creators are fairly compensated for game sales.

The director of Atari X and Atari Club, Tyler Drewitz, said the team discovered that blockchain technology allows them to connect with their community in many ways. These include working on new products, building competitive leaderboards, creating social events, and rewarding members for their participation.

Atari has been looking into blockchain technology for a while. Although the firm had stopped its blockchain game projects after X- Chief Executive Officer Fred Chesnais left, it has since re-entered the space with new projects alongside Polycade and The Sandbox. The recent partnership with Coinbase marks a major advance in Atari’s web3 strategy.

Drewitz added that for over 50 years, Atari has been a pioneer in gaming, and its early use of web3 technology is just another example. This is the firm second year of taking part in Onchain Summer, and the team is thrilled to offer both new and long-time fans Atari classics like Breakout and Asteroids viathe Onchain Arcade.

Gamers can join by going to the Onchain Summer page, where they can purchase Asteroids for $5 and compete for leaderboard spots. Breakout will be available soon, with rewards continuing through August 30th.
