Atari acquires over 100 old PC and console titles from the 1980s and 1990s

The CEO of Atari, Wade Rosen, has been planning to bring old titles to the platform. The executive, who has held the position since April 2021, has been behind some re-imaginings of its old titles inspired by a 50th-anniversary game that has integrated the elements of the company’s history.

Atari to re-release old PC and console titles

Atari has issued a press release saying it has closed the acquisition of over 100 PC and console titles from the 1980s and 1990s. Most of these games are from Accolade, Infogrames, and Microprose publishers. Following this acquisition, Atari will re-release some titles, sell merchandise and create new games depending on the IP.

“This is a deep catalog that includes groundbreaking and award-winning titles from Accolade, Infogrames and Micropose. Many of these titles are a part of Atari history, and fans can look forward to seeing many of these games re-released in physical and digital formats, and in some cases, even ported to modern consoles,” Rosen said.

Accolade was once one of the largest players in the game publishing industry until its closure in 2000. Last month, the company also announced the purchase of Nightdive Studios and the classic Berzerk game.

Atari is transforming its offerings

Rosen recently said that in the past years, there was much disappointment with Atari, adding that the company wanted things to be different this time. The executive has urged the community to be on the lookout for the company’s plans in the coming years.

It is the first time in decades that Atari is working on some exciting products. The modern form of the company is set to achieve notable growth and a broader reach from gamers excited with the latest developments.

However, the company’s efforts to rebrand have not been without challenges. The reborn VCS hardware by the company already looks the part and can serve the function for which it has been created. However, the hardware does not have enough power compared to what the players pay.

The company’s interest in non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and the blockchain industry has remained strong. The company has a whole division that is dedicated to these technologies. Moreover, the company is now evolving from selling merchandise to actually producing games, and its retro approach could revive this company.

The approach taken by Atari seeks to focus on traditional gamers that want to access early releases in better conditions. The re-releasing of classic titles could be good, with the retro style setting a new definitive tone for Atari’s gaming ecosystem.

Atari is one of the oldest gaming companies despite the old version of the company now being defunct. The company has an incredible heritage that will be enriched with new offerings. It is also not likely that the company will be competing at the top anytime soon, with a gaming industry with strong Atari company being a richer platform.
