Ubisoft says its Web3 endeavors were just for research

Yves Guillemot, Chairman of French video game conglomerate Ubisoft, seems to have toned down the rhetoric surrounding the group’s NFT video game endeavor Quartz, stating in a new conversation that the company was simply in study mode regarding Web3 tech connections.

It’s a departure from previous Ubisoft executives, such as chief economic director Frédérick Duguet, who asserted in October that crypto connections would allow customers to control and earn material and added that the business aims to become a crucial player in this space.

Guillemot seems to be taking back a few of those remarks throughout a Saturday meeting with gamesindustry.biz, highlighting that Ubisoft is mainly interested in determining how NFTs could be implemented in video games and how they would advantage players.

He stated they focus heavily on the web, the fresh crop of coordinates, and all Web3 abilities. They began testing a few stuff that is providing them with more data regarding how it could be utilized and what they ought to do in the gaming world.

He also stated that they are currently testing a few games to see if they truly meet the needs of the players. However, they remain in the testing stages.

A strong backlash

Ubisoft made its first inroad into NFTs last December when it released a beta edition of the Ubisoft Quartz to provide gamers with useable NFTs that can be used in games like Ghost Recon Breakpoint from Tom Clancy.

Some representatives of the NFT-hating gaming community were outraged by the step, accusing the company of milking each cent from its successful video game licensees by bringing NFTs in the combination.

Last January, Nicolas Pouard, vice chairman of Ubisoft’s Strategic Innovations Lab, supported the firm’s NFT efforts, claiming that video game players don’t understand what a virtual second-hand market can introduce.

Highlighting Ubisoft’s NFT implementation, Guillemot believes the business ultimately failed to properly convey the firm’s strategy for the project.

He stated that they had most likely not been very good at simply stating they were investigating. He believes he should’ve just stated that they had been progressing on it, and when they discover something that will advantage you, they will introduce it to you.

The Ubisoft Chairman had also been queried about the ecological impact of distributed ledger technology, frequently raised by players who mistake energy-intensive proof-of-work blockchains for the accepted norm for all initiatives.

Guillemot stated that, despite his concern about the industry’s ecological consequences, he is hopeful that these problems will be resolved over time. As with many subjects, it isn’t as lovely as it might be at first, but as with other emerging innovations, they’ll figure it out.
