Square Enix reveals its NFT game will have 10,000 characters

At the beginning of the year, Square Enix had announced that it would be doubling down on its blockchain and non-fungible token (NFT) gaming plans. The game publisher has now announced that its highly-anticipated NFT game known as Symbiogenesis will have 10,000 characters featuring unique designs.

Square Enix says NFT game will have 10,000 characters

Square Enix recently released a trailer for its upcoming NFT game known as Symbiogenesis. The game will have 10,000 characters, and these portraits can be used as profile pictures by users.

In the newly released trailer, the game publisher shared a video showing a floating landmass, but it did not share any more images about the Web3 game. Additionally, Square Enix has also shared images about how these 10,000 NFTT characters will look like.

The trailer also features a description stating that the game will be divided into six chapters. Moreover, the NFT characters will be traded as each new chapter is realized. The official website of Symbiogenesis will be unveiled on March 17.

Square Enix first hinted at the release of this Web3 game last year after a trademark was released online. The trademark hinted at the possible revival of Parasite Eve. However, Square Enix later clarified that the trademark pertained to a Web3 game, and the revelation raised much interest from the Web3 gaming community.

Square Enix’s blockchain gaming plans

There has been much opposition against blockchain gaming by traditional gamers and game publishers. These traditional players believe that the integration of NFTs and cryptocurrencies into games corrupts the entire ecosystem. However, the criticism has not stopped some of the largest game publishers from dipping their toes in the space.

Besides Square Enix, the other game publishers that have also shown interest in blockchain, NFTs and crypto include Ubisoft and Electronic Arts. Ubisoft’s NFT initiative attracted a lot of user backlash in its early days, but the company remained steadfast.

However, Square Enix is standing out from other video game companies, with plans to double down on the blockchain sector despite criticism. The company’s growing interest into the Web3 space could be attributed to the company’s president, Yosuke Matsuda. Matsuda has been a supporter of Square Enix’s expansion onto the blockchain gaming space.

Matsuda’s highlighted the company’s plans for the blockchain industry in 2023 in his New Year’s Letter. In the letter, he noted that he had a solid interest in the role that blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies could play in Web3 gaming. Matsuda will be replaced as CEO in June by Takashi Kiryu.

In the letter, Matsuda said that “blockchain entertainment” was an area that the company was most interested in 2023. He further said that blockchain technology has received much recognition in 2022, and the entire Web3 concept had become increasingly popular. In the letter, Matsuda also noted that there were apparent challenges posed by the blockchain industry referring to the volatility of cryptocurrencies and NFTs and the collapse of several crypto firms in 2022.
