Sony files an NFT patent to bring interoperability to NFTs

Sony Interactive Entertainment, a leading player in gaming consoles, has filed another patent related to non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The new patent aims at making NFTs transferrable between games and consoles.

Sony files patent to make NFTs transferrable

The patent filing shows Sony exploring boosting interoperability within the NFT industry. The patent will allow players using Sony products like the PlayStation to have a seamless Web3 experience.

Gamers in this space can also transfer in-game assets between devices like virtual reality headsets, tablets, computers, and smartphones. According to the patent application, the NFTs can also be used across different models, such as in both PS4 and PS5.

The patent filing also explains how an NFT ecosystem for Sony would work. It says these digital collectibles could be used to mark achievements and tournaments. The entertainment and gaming giant noted that these NFTs would also offer utility to the holders.

“In some example embodiments, the task may include a victory in an esports tournament, and the digital asset may be usable via the NFT by the first end-user entity across plural different computer simulations,” the filing said.

Sony has also highlighted plans to boost NFT interoperability within and beyond the Sony ecosystem. The company is exploring having its products in other gaming environments, such as Xbox or cloud-based video games. This would make these digital assets transferrable and useful across multiple gaming ecosystems.

Sony is also working on ensuring that the value of NFTs earned and used within its ecosystem maintains their value. The patent discusses a feature that will prevent gamers from repeating tasks that earn them the same NFTs across different games and products.

Sony’s efforts in the Web3 industry

Sony has made numerous efforts to grow its presence in the Web3 industry. The company has secured multiple partnerships and backed the testing of blockchain-based products. It has become one of the large gaming companies showing interest in crypto technology amid criticism from traditional gamers and game publishers.

In November, Sony announced a Web3-related offering by launching motion-tracking wearables. These wearables allow gamers to have control over their avatars in real-time. The launch marked Soy’s entry into the metaverse. Sony noted that the product used proprietary technology and a smartphone app to create avatar videos using whole-body movements.

In February this year, Sony Network Communications announced a partnership with the Astar blockchain network. The partnership aimed to create an incubation program targeting companies creating NFTs and decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) that have utility in the real world.

The incubation program would involve Sony and the company behind Astar Network, Startale Labs. The program started in mid-March and is slated to end in mid-June this year. Those accepted into this program will be divided into several cohorts. The successful applicants will also receive learning sessions from leading global venture capital firms to improve their product offerings.
