Pokemon is venturing into NFTs with a new job listing

The Pokémon Company International (TPCi) has created a new job listing showing the company’s interest in non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The company has advertised a new job listing for a Corporate Development Principal, with part of the job requirement being knowledge of Web3 technologies such as blockchain.

Pokémon is venturing into NFTs

The listing appeared on the company’s LinkedIn page, and it caught the attention of most gaming fans who are intrigued to know whether the company is venturing into the Web3 space.

The first part of the job listing is more focused on development, innovation, corporate strategy, and relations. However, in the section on the knowledge that the potential employee should possess, the listing noted that an applicant should be knowledgeable about the Web3 industry.

The listing states that the applicant needs to have “deep knowledge and understanding of Web3, including blockchain technologies and NFT, and/or metaverse.” It also adds that the individual should have deep connections with other players in the Web3 and metaverse industries.

Pokémon joins Web2 gaming companies venturing into Web3

This development comes when there is a notable increase in Web2 companies showing interest in the blockchain gaming and NFT industry. The move comes amid backlash from a section of gamers and game publishers who are opposed to Web3 technologies because of the belief that these technologies are corrupting the gaming space.

The job listing by TPCi is surprising because, in 2022, The Pokémon Company filed a lawsuit against an Australian company that had created an NFT game titled PokéWorld. It promoted this game as one of the products offered by The Pokémon Company. At the time, the company had said it was not interested in the NFT space.

However, TPCi is a subsidiary of the Pokémon Company. This subsidiary appears ready to venture into the blockchain industry, but there is no official confirmation that the company plans to release any Web3 product or service.

Additionally, The Pokémon Company is one of the largest players in the entertainment industry, and its products and services go beyond video games. The company offers a wide range of merchandise and media under The Pokémon brand. If it is not focused on Web3 gaming, the company might be interested in having this merchandise enter the metaverse and blockchain spaces.

Nevertheless, if The Pokémon Company is indeed dipping its toes in blockchain gaming, it will be joining other players in the Web2 industry, showing interest in the space. Last week, the President of Square Enix announced that the company would be creating blockchain games and releasing several Web3 games in the coming years.

The other traditional game publishers interested in Web3 include Electronic Arts, Konami, Sega, and Ubisoft. However, the developer of Minecraft, Mojang, has rejected the integration of Web3 technologies. Additionally, the Web3 gaming industry has continued to attract investments from venture capital firms.
