Hackers breach British Army’s Twitter account, promotes NFTs

The official Twitter account of the British Army was recently hacked. The threat actors behind the hack changed the account profile picture into one that depicts a zombie before starting a promotion for cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

British Army’s Twitter account hacked

Besides promoting NFTs and cryptocurrencies, the hacked Twitter account further claimed that the United Kingdom was planning an invasion of Pakistan. The Twitter account was recovered shortly after this breach happened.

After recovering the account, the British Army recognized this attack and apologized for the temporary disruption to its Twitter deed. It further said that a comprehensive investigation would be conducted and that the Twitter account had been restored to normalcy.

The threat actors seem to have been impersonating real-world NFTs. They impersonated a Twitter user known as “Tmw_Buidls.” This Twitter user is behind an NFT collection dubbed ThePossessedNFT. The Twitter user behind these NFTs spread awareness about the breach on the British Army’s Twitter account, urging other users to report the suspicious activity.

NFT scams have been rampant on Twitter. In some cases, these scams are promoted through hacked Twitter accounts, such as in this case. Tmw_Buidls also urged news agencies to call out this breach and alert people that he was being impersonated. Some of the information circulating on the British Army Twitter feed even contained screenshots with his name.

Increased NFT and crypto-related hacks

Hacks in the crypto space have been rampant over the past few years. Some of the largest breaches in the space have happened between 2021 and 2022. The recent breach happened in the Axie Infinity’s Ronin Bridge. The hack resulted in a loss of more than $600 million from the protocol.

The Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) collection has also suffered from several breaches in the past. BAYC is one of the most popular and valuable NFT collections in crypto. The latest breach on BAYC happened last month after its Discord server was hacked. This breach resulted in a loss of 200 ETH valued at around $360,000 at the time.

OpenSea, the largest NFT marketplace, has also been breached by attackers in the past. In May, several Discord groups for the NFT marketplace were hacked after a scammer started promoting a fake project. Several breaches have happened on OpenSea, creating panic among users.
