GameStop says the alleged customer data leak was a misunderstanding

Video game retail firm GameStop has finally responded to an alleged customer data leak reported a few days ago on Reddit. The post alleged that personal information from users was revealed when refreshing the page.

It claimed that the user’s name, address, phone number, and order history were visible. In the comment section below the post, others also commented that they have noticed the same thing, which purportedly confirmed that GameStop was experiencing a data leak incident. The issue seemed to display the private information of the customers when they try to sign in to their accounts.

GameStop Says The Whole Issue Was a Misunderstanding

GameStop has since responded to the data leak issue, calling it a massive misunderstanding. The company claims that the leak was just a test and that users should not take anything they see seriously. While responding to the requests for comment, the company’s Customer Care team stated that the alleged data leak was just a part of a test that it was conducting and the information the users saw was not authentic.

Customer Care added that the issue was also fixed the same day it occurred, and users have nothing to worry about. “This was test data created by our teams, not actual customer data,” the GameStop team noted.

But some of the users are feeling that GameStop is not revealing everything about the leak, and some of the data the users saw could be genuine.

An online search shows that some of the names and addresses the users saw could be linked to real people. GameStop has also been asked whether real address data was used for the test. As of press time, the company has not responded to the questions for more information.

GameStop Continues To Have Data Leak Issues

This is not the first time a hacking incident has been reported on the GameStop network. In September, the company received several backlashes for serious privacy violations. It included a lawsuit that claimed the video game retailer had purportedly wiretapped its customers’ chats and sold their recorded conversations to third-party firms.

And the highly divisive announcement of the firm’s plans to roll out an NFT marketplace has increased the controversies surrounding the company. Some users are seeing GameStop as a firm that continuously fails to protect customer information.
